Probationary Employees

Here are a few tips that you should be aware of when conducting a Probationary Performance Appraisal Program :

  • Probationary appraisals typically occur prior to an employee completing their first year of work in the same position or they have moved from a unionized position to an M & P position.
  • If an employee has successfully completed the probationary period, the employee can look forward to a salary increase. As the supervisor, you have the choice of awarding an increase of 1, 2, 3 or 4%. The maximum is 4%. If an employee has exceeded all expectations then normally 4% would be given. If you feel that a particular employee did not excel in all areas then you can give a lesser amount.
  • When awarding the increase it does not matter where the employee is on the salary scale; they receive the probationary increase anyway. Should an employee be at the top of the scale they would receive the increase in the form of a lump sum.
